The power of an activity tracker

A bit more than a year ago, Deloitte Belgium decided to motivate its employees to get more active by providing them with a Garmin Vivofit (#thankyouDeloitte). And I can tell you: BEST PRESENT EVER.

For me, this step counter turned out to big a great help in getting more active. It got me to realize how often I am actually seated and how little steps I used to take. In other words: it made me more aware of my activity.

Thanks to this little tool, I started creating some good habits, like getting of the tram a tram stop earlier to have a short morning walk to work. Moreover, I started taking the stairs instead the elevator and started to take a short walk to the coffee machine when the “red move alarm” started to show. And trust me, these goods habits will have a way bigger impact on your health than a bi-weekly 5k run.

Moreover, it really motivates you to really stay active. I notice that days without my activity tracker are always less active.

So far, I was the proud owner of:

  • a Garmin VivoFit (unfortunately, I lost it during my last holidays),
  • the Leaf by BellaBeat (looks gorgeous, but I was not as satisfied with it as with my VivoFit)

As I lost my VivoFit (during my holidays…), I ordered the FitBit Charge 2 (it’s actually the first thing I did, coming back from my holidays…). I’m wearing it for about 3 weeks now, and I love it! It’s definitely my favourite, as it also tracks your heart rate (which is actually really nice) and allows you to track different types of workouts.

Nevertheless, I have to admit that the Garmin VivoFit is great to start with and I very much enjoyed it. The Garmin VivoFit is one of the first and most basic activity trackers currently on the market, allowing you to track the amount of steps you take, the distance and calories burned. Moreover, it reminds you to stay active when you’re seated for too long. As such, I’m convinced that the Garmin VivoFit has the ability to make you more aware of your activity and to get you moving more. So, if in doubt, the Garmin might be a good “starter” for you.

As for the FitBit Charge 2: plenty of reviews are available online, so I decided not to write one myself. Nevertheless, I wanted to share with you that the FitBit Charge 2 is -next to the “Garmin Vivosmart HR”- one of the best activity trackers in its category (but the FitBit really looks nicer -there are even some nice leather straps available -which if of course put on my Christmas wish list). So, if you’d be interested in getting a more advanced activity tracker than the VivoFit, you can start googling around for those 2.

If you don’t own one yet: an activity tracker is definitely one of those things you didn’t know you are actually missing in your life, so go and get yourself one and start moving!
